Knowledge, Attitudes and Practices on HIV Prevention Among Health Science Students

Abstract

A descriptive cross-sectional study examining HIV/AIDS knowledge, attitudes and prevention practices among Diploma students at Mbale College of Health Sciences.

<p>A total of 380 students from all six diploma programmes were surveyed between February and April 2024 using a self-administered structured questionnaire. Descriptive and inferential statistics were computed using SPSS v26.</p><p>Overall HIV knowledge was high (87.6%). However, consistent condom use was reported by only 41.3% of sexually active respondents. Students in higher years of study demonstrated significantly better preventive practices (p < 0.01). Stigma towards people living with HIV remained a concern in 22% of respondents.</p><p>Targeted, year-specific HIV/AIDS sensitisation sessions and peer-education programmes are recommended to bridge the knowledge-to-practice gap.</p>
