Antibiotic Prescribing Patterns at Mbale Regional Referral Hospital: A Retrospective Analysis

Abstract

A review of antibiotic prescription records at MRRH to assess adherence to the Uganda Clinical Guidelines and identify patterns of potential antibiotic over-use and resistance risk.

<p>Prescription records for 600 inpatients (January – December 2023) from medical, surgical and paediatric wards were reviewed. The WHO ATC/DDD methodology was used to quantify antibiotic consumption.</p><p>Broad-spectrum antibiotics (amoxicillin-clavulanate, ciprofloxacin, metronidazole) accounted for 71% of all prescriptions. Culture and sensitivity testing preceded prescription in only 18% of cases. Compliance with Uganda Clinical Guidelines was 63%.</p><p>Strengthening antimicrobial stewardship programmes and improving access to microbiological diagnostics are priority recommendations from this study.</p>
