Our History

Our Background Since 1958

Mbale College of Health Sciences was established in 1958 by the Government of Uganda to address the critical shortage of trained health workers in the eastern region. Initially offering a single programme in medical assisting, the college has grown steadily over more than six decades into a multi-programme institution training Allied Health Professionals across six accredited disciplines.

Key milestones include the introduction of the Diploma in Clinical Medicine and Community Health (1975), Diploma in Pharmacy (1988), Higher Diploma in Anaesthesia (1995), Certificate in Medical Theatre Techniques (2019), Diploma in Clinical and Community Nutrition (2019), and Certificate in Pharmacy (2019). Each programme was developed in response to evolving national healthcare needs and is fully accredited by the UHPAB.

Today the college enrols over 2,500 students and has produced more than 15,000 graduates who serve in health facilities throughout Uganda and across East Africa. Our campus has expanded to include modern lecture halls, a skills laboratory, a pharmaceutical laboratory, a nutrition demonstration kitchen, and a well-stocked library.
